Kaslo and Area D based grass roots organization SLIDE, Support for Learning Inclusivity, Diversity, and Empathy, has been raising funds since July 2020 to purchase books for our local public and school libraries. SLIDE’s focus is on books that represent diverse characters and are written by diverse authors. They purchase books from local, independent bookstores, with the majority of books coming from Otter Books in Nelson.
Another collaboration is with our community’s Holiday Hampers, which are food and gift boxes for families put together by the North Kootenay Community Services Food Hub. JVH foods class students make a variety of delicious pastries to add, and SLIDE puts a book for each child and teen whose family receives a hamper.
Diversities represented in the books SLIDE purchases include racial, sexual, gender, ability, family, economic, citizenship/immigration status, age, and neurodiversity.
They have raised over $10,000 through community fundraising, and grants and have purchased about 500 books for J. V. Humphries, Jewett Elementary and the Kaslo Public Library.
