SD8 Purchases Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada - Giant Floor Map

The Aboriginal Education department in SD8 – Kootenay Lake has purchased two Giant Floor Maps as supplemental resources for the Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada.

The Giant Floor Map measures 11 meters by 8 meters. It includes language families, traditional territories, traditional place names, treaty information, geographical and topographical layouts, Indian Residential School locations, Metis Settlements, Indian Reserves, cities and towns with significant First Nations, Metis, and Inuit populations. There is a timeline around the edge of the map which includes Indigenous events, people, places throughout the history of Turtle Island.

This resource assists educators in addressing and teaching big ideas, critical thinking, personal and social responsibility, communication, connections, equity for Indigenous students, confronting implicit biases and privilege, and informs an anti-racist perspective.
