Our Celebration of Learning on April 23rd  was a huge success! Many visitors, including parents, siblings, extended family members, and friends came out to support our learners. There was a fantastic variety of exhibits to explore.  Ms Dryden’s K/1 students shared a portfolio of their learning with their families in their classroom. Ms Gresley-Jones’ Gr. 1/2/3 class demonstrated their scientific exploration of forces, motion, reactions, and energy in the gym along with the three Intermediate classes.

Ms Okros’ Gr. 3/4/5 class centerpiece was each student’s animal research project and display. Students researched the habitat, the food web, animal description and more. In addition, their portfolios showcased learning displayed all over the school. Families found math reflections and persuasive writes on their desks, hibernation art and writing in the hall along with tree art, Earth Day art and our black history Alma Thomas art. In the library, they had their reader’s spotlight!

Mr. Fertey's Gr. 5/6 students displayed their Earth Science projects, featuring volcano models, display boards, engaging slideshows, research essays, plus light-hearted, comic-book style stories from the rock cycle. This interdisciplinary work provided opportunities for every learner to shine!

Ms Leitch’s Gr. 6/7 class displayed their novel study analysis, as well as the process and results from their bridge project. Students and families participated in a trivia scavenger hunt, searching the exhibits for clues- a round of applause to the three students who managed to get 100% on this challenging quiz! Finally, congratulations to all the students for their impressive work on display at the event, and thank you to everyone who came by to see what we’ve been up to this year.

Sports and Physical Education

Our JVH Intermediate Basketball team participated in the regional Basketball Tournament held at Trafalgar Middle School on March 11, 2025. The team can be very proud of their play and level of sportsmanship!  Many congratulations on their 3rd place finish!

We give a huge thank you to JVH Staff member Colleen O’Brien for managing this team, to Gr. 12 student coach Tomakin Provencher and parent coach Stefan Weaver. This team would not have been possible without them volunteering. We look forward to another stellar team next year!

Our three Intermediate classes are participating in swimming lessons at the Nelson Community Complex this month.

Earth Day Community Clean Up

On Tuesday, April 22nd, JVH Elementary/ Secondary School celebrated Earth Day with a school-wide community clean-up initiative spearheaded by teacher Kate Okros. Each grade was given a specific neighborhood within Kaslo to clean, and the garbage collection was very successful. The students were fortunate that the sun was shining, and the temperature was pleasant throughout the day. Some elementary classes continued the celebration with a field trip to the Kaslo & District Public Library for Earth Day themed activities and story time.

Kids Hike for Climate Event

On Monday, May 5th we will be holding our 4th annual Kids' Hike for Climate which is a community event and fundraiser for the Kootenay Climate Hub. JVH students and families are invited to take part by: collecting pledges as donations for the Kootenay Climate Hub, meeting up at 11:00 on May 5th for our opening ceremony, walking with us along the Kaslo River Trail and throughout the Village of Kaslo, and bringing a posters with a phrase about a climate topic of interest, if they so choose. Students are also invited to contribute to a collaborative art display to help promote the event within our school community. We hope that many families with come take part with us this year, as this is the first time that the climate hike will be a school-wide event!
