Fostering Connected Learners: Growing Together through Engagement and Student Voice
Greetings JVH Community!
As we enter November, our school community remains dedicated to deepening the connections between students, their learning experiences, and their roles within the world. This commitment is a reflection of the Board's goal of fostering Connected Learners—an aim to inspire students to become curious, critical, and creative stewards of both their local and global communities. This month, we have focused on supporting students in building knowledge, curiosity, and awareness about pressing issues close to home and around the world. As we do so, we are also fostering collaborative partnerships, providing meaningful opportunities for students to express their ideas, and helping them actively participate in their learning environment.
One of the highlights since I last wrote to you was the dynamic cultural performance by Mr. Mojo, a celebrated performance artist known for his unique blend of music, storytelling, and dance. His engaging presentation captivated students and provided a fun and engaging exploration of cultural heritage and understanding. Through captivating tales and interactive storytelling, Mr. Mojo encouraged students to think critically about alternate worldviews and the importance of preserving oral traditions. His performance illustrated how stories keep history alive and strengthen community connections, fostering a deeper understanding of cultural significance among our students. This experience not only entertained but also inspired curiosity and a greater appreciation for the diverse narratives that shape our world.
In October, we also organized a memorable multi-age craft activity in the Lighthouse Theater, which brought together students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Working in their house teams, students collaborated to create unique art pieces, blending their diverse skills and ideas to produce something truly collective. This cooperative art project went beyond mere creativity; it served as an opportunity for students to build connections across grade levels and deepen their relationships with one another. Younger students learned from older peers, while older students embraced leadership roles, all within a supportive and inclusive setting. This session also fostered an environment where students could explore their creativity, exchange perspectives, and develop mutual respect for each other’s talents and ideas. Engaging in hands-on art with peers from different grades encourages empathy, curiosity, and a sense of belonging—qualities that are essential for nurturing compassionate and responsible global citizens. Additionally, this experience highlights the importance of community-building activities in creating a positive and interconnected school culture, reinforcing our mission to help students feel engaged and valued as integral members of our learning community.
Another significant event this term was our Truth and Reconciliation assembly, where students took center stage as MCs, showcasing their artistic talents and sharing their reflections. This assembly provided an important platform for students to express their thoughts and creativity, highlighting their commitment to truth and reconciliation. Our Intermediate 2 class contributed to the event by crafting their own territorial acknowledgments, each a personal expression of the land's significance. These thoughtful statements demonstrated how students engage deeply with important cultural and historical concepts while articulating their understanding in their own words.
Through this assembly, students were offered various avenues to share their perspectives, connect with their community, and explore subjects meaningful to them. By involving students in leadership roles, artistic expression, and cultural acknowledgment, we empower them to become curious, critical, and compassionate stewards of both local and global communities. Through these experiences, students learn to respect diverse histories and voices while contributing their own, fostering greater awareness, empathy, and responsibility.
In conclusion, these past few weeks have been a time of significant growth and engagement at JV Humphries as we continue to nurture Connected Learners within our school community. The cultural performances, collaborative projects, and meaningful assemblies have all served to deepen the connections between students, their learning experiences, and the world around them. We remain committed to providing our students with opportunities to express their voices, explore their interests, and engage with the rich tapestry of cultures and ideas that shape our shared community. Together, we are fostering a learning environment that values curiosity, collaboration, and the responsible navigation of our diverse world. Here’s to continued growth and connection as we journey through the school year!
