We’re looking for the superheroes in our schools! This year Kootenay Savings Credit Union is offering SIX $2000 Community Champs Bursaries to Kootenay-area Grade 12 and post-secondary students who selflessly give back to their community. We know there are many amazing students out there in our grad classes and post-secondary schools… we want to hear their stories and reward them!
Some highlights of our Community Champs Bursary program:
Six $2000 bursaries available for the Kootenay region. (increased from 4 in previous years)
Our Selection Committee reviews all applications/nominations and selects the four recipients.
Applications Open March 1 and close April 17, 2020.

BC Tech Scholarship - posted on January 31, 2020
Grade 12 students accepted into a technology-related program at a B.C. post-secondary institution this fall are invited to apply for a 2020 BC Tech Scholarship. Three scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded. Applications are being accepted until Feb. 26.

Columbia Power’s Secondary School Bursary, as chosen by JVH scholarship committee - posted on January 28, 2020
Please note the following criteria, selection and distribution information for the Columbia Power Bursary Program:
The Columbia Power Bursary candidate has fulfilled high school graduation requirements and will be enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution within one year of graduating.
The school’s award committee will select the Columbia Power Bursary recipient – Columbia Power is not involved in the selection of the recipient.
The candidate is an individual who has demonstrated excellence in achievement during their senior year. This does not necessarily mean achieving the highest marks, but that the recipient has worked hard and has shown a real desire to excel for themselves – this can include non-academic achievements such as volunteering.
The Columbia Power Bursary can only be used towards the purchase of books or payment of tuition.
The bursary cheque will be sent to the recipient’s school for distribution. Students must contact their school administration for details on how the award will be made available to them.
The bursary cheque will be forwarded to your school following the start of our new fiscal year (beginning April 1). I will also follow up with you later in the spring for names of recipients so we can prepare letters and certificates for each student.

British Columbia School Superintendents Association
The British Columbia School Superintendents Association will award six regional scholarships to students planning to pursue post-secondary studies - posted on January 22, 2020
Students wishing to be considered for a scholarship must be currently enrolled in their final year of studies at a public secondary school in British Columbia and expected to graduate in June 2020. One winner will be chosen from each of the six BCSSA provincial chapters (Fraser Valley, Kootenay-Boundary, Metro, Vancouver Island, Northern, Thompson-Okanagan). Each winner will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship.
In selecting the recipients for this year’s awards, the scholarship committees will consider demonstrated exemplary service and leadership within the school and community. Letters of reference will be required affirming the applicant’s accomplishments and efforts to improve the quality of life for young people and others through volunteer work and other activities. In addition, the applicant must submit a short description (450 words maximum) of how his/her volunteer service has made a difference in the life or lives of others.
The winners will be announced in late spring 2020.
Only complete applications will be accepted for the scholarship selection process. Please ensure your package contains the required information and documents. Please provide the information as attachments in PDF or Microsoft Word format.
Winners will be awarded a cheque once proof of post-secondary application/registration and their Social Insurance Number has been provided to the BCSSA.
Note to Teachers: Class/school entries emailed together must include a completed application package, as specified above, for each student.

West Kootenay Toy Run Scholarhip - posted on January 22, 2020
Dear Students:
The West Kootenay Toy Run Association is again offering five $1,000.00 bursaries to graduating students in the West Kootenay Area. We are looking for students who are experiencing true financial hardship due to circumstances beyond their control. These are students who, without our help, would not be able to continue their post secondary education. We are not necessarily looking for a student with top marks, but rather a student who has set realistic and achievable goals for themselves.
The West Kootenay Toy Run Association is a registered, non-profit organization whose main purpose, through our Motorcycle Toy Run and raffle ticket sales, helps
- underprivileged children and families throughout the West Kootenay Area, Our 2020 - West Kootenay Toy Run will be taking place September 13th, 2020 if you would like to check us out.
What we require from you, the applicant, is a hand written in black pen history. Please do not write back to back in your letter or staple them. In your history please provide a little information about yourself, what hardships you have faced to cause the financial difficulty that has been beyond your control and what achievable and realistic goals you have set out for your continuing education. Please attach the West Kootenay Toy Run Association 2020 Bursary Application checklist to the front of your hand written in black pen history.
All applications must be given to your school counselor no later than April 13 2020.
We will be reading the applications at our May 5, 2020 meeting. I will be contacting your counselor with the names of the successful recipients.

Mary E. Gibbons Memorial Centennial Scholars Award - posted on January 22, 2020
Awards totaling $40,000 per year and not less than $10,000 each, have been made available through an endowment established by a $500,000 donation from Richard P. “Dick” and Colleen A. Gibbons of Whistler, BC, along with matching funds from the University of British Columbia. The award, in memory of Mary E. Gibbons (1919-1970), is for outstanding domestic undergraduate students entering university directly from secondary school or transferring from another post-secondary institution.
Recipients are academically qualified and would not be able to attend UBC without financial assistance. In addition to academic merit, consideration is given to qualities such as leadership skills, community service and recognized extra-curricular achievement. Subject to continued academic standing, the awards will be renewed for a further three years of study or until the first undergraduate degree is obtained (whichever is the shorter period). Preference will be given to students from regions in the following priority: the Sea to Sky Region, Nelson, BC and its immediate surrounding areas, or Burnaby, BC.
Mary was born in Nelson, British Columbia to Richard and Elsie Long. Her father died of cancer when she was twelve, and Mary and her two siblings, Harold and Doreen, were raised by their mother. She married David Walter Gibbons in the late 1930s and moved to Burnaby. Mary was devoted to her sons, David and Dick (both UBC Law graduates and Thunderbird Varsity Football players) and worked various jobs to help support her family. Mary died of cancer shortly after her fifty-first birthday. The awards are made on the recommendation of the Centennial Scholars Entrance Award Committee. (First award available for the 2020/2021 winter session).

Columbia Basin Trust Youth Community Service Award and Neil Muth Memorial Scholarship - posted on January 22, 2020

The scholarship is awarded by the Muth family, administered by Columbia Basin Trust and made possible by the generous donations of family, friends, local governments and organizations. There will be $10,000 available to support two to four applicants this year.

Status Indians, Non-status Indians, Inuit and Metis are welcome to apply. Recipients are selected primarily on the basis of personal and academic achievements along with individual financial need. $4000 per academic year for education and living expenses for 2-4 years.
BC Excellence & Shulich Leader Scholarships - posted on December 1, 2019
There are two very prestigious scholarships that require student nomination on behalf of the school. The BC Excellence Scholarship https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/support/scholarships/provincial-scholarships/bc-excellence-scholarships Application due Feb. 28/20 and the Schulich Leader Scholarship https://www.schulichleaders.com/ Application due Jan. 29.
To ensure that we are nominating the very best student for each of these scholarships please submit a professional cover letter addressed to JVH Administration outlining why you should be considered as a nominee and how will you benefit from this award (what are your future plans?). Make sure you have researched the award and know all the selection criteria. This must be submitted to Ms. T no later than Monday, December 16. Selected nominees will be informed prior to Christmas break so that they have ample time to put together an excellent scholarship application.
